Feedback, Presentation 1 & 2

First of all, in presentation 1, I was going to show what I will be doing and specifically focused on sculptures.
  • Expanding skill set into 3D art
  • Aiming to use skills from both traditional art practices as well as using variety of software such as Zbrush, Maya and Photoshop - hoping to improve my skills using different software during the process of producing 3D chracter.
Then talking about the concept design of the character, modelling and the references I will be using and of course, the actual sculpting part as well.
In the end, I was describing the 'potential' outcome:

  • Outcome of this project will be an increase in my skills and confidence using different software
  • In the future, I would like to use these skills to create other 3D characters as well as vehicles and environments.

However, all these seems to be like a plan but it still does not tell audience why I'm doing this and just saying that 'hoping to improve the software skill' is too technical and you can do that any time you want. For this project, I needed more decent answer which provides, in this project, why I'm doing this and for what purpose.

Also, the potential outcome is just plain simple. Somehow, it's too plain that it did not the reason of these purposes.

As for the review/feedback, they suggested that it would be effective to show 'why you are doing this and for what reason', rather than 'how I'm going to do this' Of course the outcome and the process of the project is important but the reason behind these process is essential to know.

In presentation 2, it was time to focus and step up the game of what I was talking about in Presentation 1 and change some of the things I have said.

Concept Ideas:
  • Creating characters with strong purpose
  • Comparison between working from 2D and 3D
Context:
  • Understanding basic body structures of human/animals
  • Purposefully designed to fit the role and purpose
Reason/Why?
  • The purpose of this project: creating a character embedded with emotion & aspirations
  • Improvement of technical skills within the modules duration
  • Intuitive way of working - making it easier to create concept works
Future progress/Aim
  • More dynamic character designs
  • Further understanding of bone structures of creatures
  • Further progress of background & 3D character combination
It seems there were significant improvement compare to presentation 1, and making a lot more sense to what I'm going to represent. However, there were still some parts that needed to be fixed.

First of all, one of the feedback was that they were confused with the part 'embedded with emotion' as how I'm going to do that. It was rather quite difficult to explain and sometimes, I also questioned myself how I'm going to manage that. so there was the part which I might need to adjust.

Secondly, intuitive/instinctive way of working: will it really work without any solid references or images to look at.

H.R.Giger & Dr.Stuart Sumida

Alien, known as one of the best horror sci-fi film of all time and the design of the alien was absolutely incredible (a good mixture of the raw power of the alien and sheer horror it can give it to the audience was fabulous). Necronom IV, Giger's previous painting and an inspiration towards to his creation of Alien, would be the starting point of my model's and the basic research.

Series of images of Aliens (surrealist print that formed the basis for the Alien's design)

However, alien or extraterrestrial spices have different body structure so to educate myself, animal bone/body structure would be a great way to start.

Dr Stuart Sumida, who well known for his knowledge of Palentology and Vertebrate Morphology and have extensive working experience in animation such as Lion King and Kung Fu Panda.

Research

First, lets see what I want to make & what I want to do.

Moodboard and Environment analysis

One of the feature which I was going to present was environment, as well as creating character. Therefore, these images and mood-board set me in a course where I can think it will suit with the character I will design in near future.

Choices

After 1st week of practical in Creative Research and understood what we are doing for this module. Our priority is we can choose whichever category we are most interested and would like to make as a final project and for me, where my strong area would be in traditional art since I have learned the foundation of fine art for a long period of time.

Also, 3D isn’t much of my area of choice, I liked using Zbrush software (maybe due to its tools or how easy it is to create a 3D character compare to using Maya) and with my traditional art (probably do most of drawings and paintings on a small scale) could combine both of them together.

Finally, I decided that I will be using either Zbrush or Maya to create basic 3D Character in order to get realistic proportions. I will then import a jepg of my model into Photoshop and use it as the base of my painting.
